Wozniacki got off to a blistering start and didn’t face a single break point in the opening set, romping to a bagel in just 25 minutes. Halep, who struggled to assert her authority throughout, continued to find it difficult to get past her opponent’s serve and quickly found herself 1-3 down in the second set. Despite forcing a break point, Halep couldn’t convert allowing Wozniacki to take a commanding 6-0 4-1 lead. From there on in, the Dane looked assured and took her first match point on the Halep serve.

The convincing victory means the Dane has won her opening two matches by dropping a total of just four games. Wozniacki, who has fought her way to break back into the top eight this year after dropping outside the top 70, was once again consistently good on her serve, winning 73% first and 64% second serves. Halep will now go into the final game needing a win to claim a semi final spot.

Garcia defeats Svitolina in epic

Caroline Garcia recaptured her recent form by defeating Elina Svitolina in an epic three-set encounter. The French outsider recovered from a set down to overcome her opponent 6-7 6-3 7-5, hitting an impressive 58 winners along the way.

It’s another setback for Svitolina, who has struggled to recapture her excellent consistent form at this year’s tournament. Despite saving two set points to take the opening set, Svitolina struggled on her second serve as Garcia stole the momentum to take the second 6-3.

In a nervy final set, which saw five breaks of serve, it was Garcia that was able to take the match at the first time of asking.

The victory means Svitolina goes into Friday’s final round-robin match needing a convincing victory over Simona Halep. Meanwhile, a straight sets victory for Garcia over Wozniacki could see the French number one through to the knockout stages.
