Halep suffers surprise defeat as Garcia qualifies for semi finals

Caroline Garcia staged a remarkable comeback to qualify for the semi finals of the WTA Finals, after a three set victory over Caroline Wozniacki and a defeat for world number one Simona Halep.

Winning 0-6 6-3 7-5, Garcia impressed over the in-form Dane with 31 winners to Wozniacki’s 20. The French number one recovered from a break down in the final set to clinch the match in 2 hours 20 minutes. She assured her qualification to tomorrow’s semi finals after Halep suffered a surprise 6-3 6-4 loss to Elina Svitolina, continuing her fantastic run of form which has seen her elevate to the top eight.

Halep looked a forlorn figure throughout and her defeat against Svitolina opens up the possibility of the world number one slot changing hands for a final time this year. If Karolina Pliskova wins the tournament, it will be the Czech that ends the year as world number one adding more drama and narrative to the competition.

For Elina Svitolina, the victory ends a fantastic year which has seen the Ukrainian win five titles on the WTA tour, including the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Semi finals set in Singapore

As Garcia had a better head to head record over Wozniacki, she clinched top spot in the group and goes on to face Venus Williams on Saturday. Caroline Wozniacki will need her defensive a-game against Karolina Pliskova in a tie which sees two of the early front runners try to recover from final group match defeats.

Wozniacki leads the head to head record over Pliskova 5-3, although all three victories for the Czech have come this year. Meanwhile, Garcia and Williams will square off for the first time since 2014, where the pair exchanged victories leaving the head to head at 1-1.
