Great Britain seeded ahead of World Group II play-off draw

Great Britain will be seeded for the Fed Cup World Group II play-off draw, which takes place on Tuesday.

Anne Keothavong’s team, who comfortably defeated Estonia, Portugal and Hungary without dropping a rubber over the weekend, will look to escape the Europe/Africa zone for the first time since 1993. Great Britain will be seeded alongside Russia, Spain and Ukraine and will face either:

  • Latvia;
  • Paraguay;
  • Japan; or
  • Canada

Britain will be hoping for a home tie – something they haven’t had in 25 years. Latvia, who pose Britain’s biggest threat, are certainly a team to avoid, with both Jelena Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova both playing as the Latvians overcame Serbia in the Europe/Africa play-off.

A home draw against either Paraguay, Canada or Japan would be considered a good draw for Britain, who have lost to Sweden, Argentina and Romania (all away) in their last three World Group II play-offs. The announcement of the seeds is definitely optimistic news for British fans, who have yet to see their team win the Fed Cup.

The draw takes place at 10:00 (GMT) on Tuesday 13 February.
